Intent
At Woodcroft Academy, we believe that mathematics is an essential skill for life. Our curriculum is designed to help all pupils develop secure understanding, confidence and independence as mathematicians.
We use the mastery approach, which means that all pupils are taught through whole-class interactive teaching. Lessons are planned so that pupils work through the same content together, with a shared focus on mastering each concept before moving on to the next. Learning is broken down into small, carefully sequenced steps, allowing every child the time and support needed to build strong foundations.

A key part of our approach is deep understanding. We place emphasis on the NCETM’s five big ideas: coherence, mathematical thinking, fluency, variation and representations. These elements are closely connected and help pupils make sense of mathematical ideas in a meaningful way. Our aim is to equip all pupils with a powerful set of tools so that they can be fluent in maths, reason effectively and think mathematically.
Our mathematics curriculum is research informed and values opportunities for children to think deeply and develop conceptual understanding. We encourage pupils to be observant learners who spot patterns, make connections and explain their ideas clearly. Oracy is at the heart of our learning, ensuring that children fully understand what they are doing and can talk like mathematicians.

Impact
Children will achieve age related expectations, or make at least expected progress in mathematics at the end of their cohort year. Children will develop a love of mathematics. Children will have a sound understanding facts, procedures and problem solving. Children will develop skills that are relevant in a real life context. Children will talk about their mathematics confidently and clearly.
